Computational guided self-organization

What seems to be most interesting and having a potential now is not specific blobs, describing types of computing systems in the space of distributed computing, but rather systems, which themselves can move through this space. Starting from complete asynchrony, they would allow for emergence of local and maybe global consensuses, which may disintegrate when needed or form a new consensus / synchronized localities when and where they are needed. Such system may not be able to work if designed completely bottom-up; but, it should allow for indeterministic emergence - therefore it cannot be build top-down. As such, it would have to integrate elements of freedom / asynchrony and constraints / synchrony.
